Yellowstone has been following the Dutton family and their tumultuous relationship with the local Natives for three seasons now. Ahead of season four on the Paramount Network, the balance between the two sides could soon be put to the ultimate test in the ever-difficult situation of land control. Ironically, it could bring the two sides closer together in the face of a common enemy.
Will John Dutton give up his land in season 4?
The old saying, find the enemy of your enemy, and you’ll find a friend, could potentially summate season four of Yellowstone.
Throughout the first four seasons, the Duttons, led by John (played by Kevin Costner) have had a love-hate relationship with the Natives.
Due to the marriage between Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Monica (Kelsey Asbille), many of the wounds were healed, but the scars were still there.
At the end of season three, Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) offers John a chance to join him and his tribe in the lawsuit against market equities, but the plotline has been left unresolved.
Yet, Angela (Q’orianka Kilcher) is casting a shadow of vengeance over the Duttons, which is something that won’t go away even with a treaty between the two sides.
Finally, Kayce and Monica’s son, Tate (Brecken Merrill) represents the best of both sides, and is someone the two groups can fight for.
On Reddit, user meemf offered some thoughts on what could happen between the two sides in season four.
They wrote: “From the perspective of the Natives, I sympathize with their resentment toward people like the Duttons who took possession of their land and now act as though developers don’t have the right to do the same.
“Tate & Monica seem to be the only hope at bridging these two worlds together and I wonder if their existence in both these worlds simultaneously will influence the behaviours / decisions of Rainwater & co moving forward.
“Part of me wants them to put the Duttons in their place and avenge their ancestors but another part of me hopes for harmony & mutual success.
“I think if Angela remains in the picture it will be difficult to envision the latter playing out but who knows- stranger things have happened.”
It seems as though the two sides working together would be beneficial, but the situation is more complex than that.
There is a lot of tension between the Duttons and Rainwater, with hatred that goes back hundreds of years.
User ihearsev added: “I like this a lot in theory, but as a practical matter, how would that work?
“Let’s say by some miracle, John suddenly turns beneficent and bequeaths 30,000 acres to the Broken Rock people.
“Okay, the Broken Rock people aren’t just going to let that land sit there, undeveloped–they will build homes, schools, roads…
“Just sayin, the Broken Rock people would develop the land if they had it back, no question. Exactly what John cannot abide even thinking about, right or wrong as he may be.”
Either way, John is in no condition to be making demands right now, after being attacked and shot at the end of season three.
This puts him in a vulnerable spot to give up some of his land, something he has fought against his whole life.
The culprit behind the shooting remains to be seen, though it is likely to do with the ongoing situation over land ownership.
Regardless of what either side may want, it seems inevitable they will have to come to some kind of understanding if either side has any hope of continuing to live peacefully.
The origins of their division will likely be explored in the spin-off Y: 1883, which is currently in development.
Little is known about the project, but it will focus on the early years of the Dutton Ranch and its dark origins.
The conflict between the Duttons and Natives stretches back to this point, so their rivalry will almost definitely be a major aspect of the prequel.
Yellowstone season four premieres on November 7 on the Paramount Network and Peacock in the USA. A UK release date is unconfirmed.
