This 2005 Movie Holds the Guinness World Record for Longest On-Screen Kiss

For movie fans of all ages, few things are as dramatic or as emotional as a sweeping love story. And the best love stories, regardless of genre or plot, usually involve a romantic kiss. Over the past few decades, countless movies have featured dramatic kissing scenes. They ignite viewers’ imaginations and create an unforgettable movie experience.

But interestingly, the movie that holds the record for the longest on-screen kiss could hardly be considered romantic.

Movie-goers love a good smooch

Romantic dramas will likely always have a place in filmgoers’ hearts. But a few movie kisses have distinguished themselves. Perhaps it’s the way they’re framed or the buildup to them. Whatever the reason, they’ve sparked movie magic.

For instance, The Notebook includes one of the most iconic kisses. One reason is that the showstopping moment occurs well past the film’s halfway point, stoking anticipation. The steamy smooch even won co-stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss in 2005.

Of course, one of the all-time great movie kisses is between Vivien Leigh’s Scarlett O’Hara and Clark Gable’s Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind. The 1939 epic spawned a love story for the ages and a kiss scene that has often been imitated but never duplicated.

Other iconic movie kisses include makeout moments in Titanic, My Girl, Moonlight, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Love Story. Even animated films have characters locking lips. You’ll see cartoon smooches in Lady and the Tramp, Pocahontas, and Beauty and the Beast

The movie ‘Kids in America’

One thing all of the above movies have in common is their love stories. However, one notable onscreen kiss comes in a movie that’s far from romantic. Kids in America is a comedy released in 2005 and inspired by real-life events, IMDb reports. The story follows a group of high-schoolers who gather to protest their school’s overbearing principal.

The movie was a box-office bomb, and critics universally panned it. These days, it might be quickly dismissed as a typical early-2000s teen comedy. Still, Kids in America holds a unique distinction.

The Guinness World Record for the longest on-screen kiss

According to Guinness World Records, Kids in America holds the record for the longest screen kiss in a commercial feature film. Although the embrace is nowhere near as romantic as the one between Scarlett and Rhett Butler or even Jack and Rose, the on-screen makeout session lasts for a staggering 6 minutes 44 seconds between co-stars Stephanie Sherrin and Gregory Smith.

But viewers who want to witness the epic session will have to watch the end credits, where Sherrin’s and Smith’s characters re-create famous onscreen kisses over the years. Ultimately, although Kids in America didn’t earn critical acclaim, it’s still a worthwhile watch for those who appreciate movie history.
