The Blacklist returned to NBC with season nine in October and its highly-anticipated comeback took place with a number of major differences. As well as the death of a major character in the season finale, the shows’ creator announced his exit and following his departure viewers have noticed a major difference – which they exposed.

Taking to Reddit, user NoSidesOnlyPlayers wrote about the significant changes they noticed in season nine.

They wrote: “There are obviously a lot of changes with s9, but I think the loss of the show’s creator is probably the most noticeable.

“No matter how I feel about the writing, characters, or the dragging out of the central mystery for way too long, I believe Jon brought a feel to TBL that left with him.

“There was a darkness to both the blacklisters and the humour that I believe came from him and is noticeably absent,” they added.

The viewer continued: “Although the perfection of the music, one of my favourite things about the show, has been lacking in recent seasons, it is completely gone now.”

The Blacklist’s creator Jon Bokenkamo had been a part of the series since it first began in 2013 and was co-showrunner alongside the executive producer John Eisendrath.

As the crime thriller was his brainchild, fans were shocked when he announced his departure not long after Megan Boone’s exit.

After her character passed away, the actress took to social media and wrote “These eight years playing Liz Keen have helped me better define the world and myself, as she set out to do the same.”

Some fans believed something occurred between the showrunners behind-the-scenes, which often happens with long-running shows.

With the creator leaving, some viewers believe there could’ve been some creative differences between them, which perhaps left him no freedom to tell the story the way he wanted.

Another Reddit User, Coldwearwolf8233 agreed: “You are so right, that makes a lot of sense as the early seasons were my favourites, with a more brutal Red, and the amazing scene and music combos, like Diane Fowler’s demise.”

They added: “That started getting eroded quite early though, and the emotional crap with a gentler Red, the ghastly Agnes, set in.”

Jon Bokenkamp had announced his departure from the series in June, as season eight closed out.

He tweeted the lengthy post to fans on Twitter, it read: “Dear Blacklisters: I wanted to write to you directly to let you know that I’ve made the difficult decision to leave ‘The Blacklist.’

“I love this show with all of my heart, and it’s been an incredible journey, but after eight years I feel it’s time for me to step out of my comfort zone.

“To try something new and explore a few of the other characters and stories that have been crawling around in my head,” he explained.

Other viewers including fitbit1974 disagreed with the Reddit user and they said: “Well there are more than one writer and most of the stuff was written NOT by JB. If JB wrote an episode than mostly with others together.”

Jen5225 commented: “I would guess that the humour, especially with Red, comes from Spader having a lot of control over his lines. He is the person who found the humour in Red, not JB, from what I’ve seen in interviews.”

As The Blacklist remains NBC’s third longest-running series, there could be a lot of pressure to compete and outdo the competitors.

Although Jon never gave a detailed reason for his departure, he told Entertainment Weekly: “It’s really hard after eight years to find new surprises, and I think these two episodes have some of the biggest surprises we’ve had in eight years.”

The Blacklist season 9 episode six will air Thursday, December 9 at 8pm EST on NBC in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
