Talking to the Loose Women panel on Thursday, Penny Lancaster opened up about her marriage to Rod Stewart and how he was reluctant to wed and “didn’t want to settle down”. Rod has been married three times, first to Alana Stewart, then Rachel Hunter. He divorced Rachel in 2006 before tying the knot with Penny the following year.

Penny has now been married to singing legend Rod Stewart for 14 years, and they share two children together.

While they are happily married, the Loose Women panellist was worried they wouldn’t make it down the aisle.

She told her fellow panellists: “It had been about six years since we’d been together and for a long time, he didn’t want to get married again and have children.”

Penny previously admitted she gave Rod an ultimatum when they started their relationship.

“I made the rules pretty clear and if you’re happy to live under the terms I want to have a relationship in, then great.”

Speaking on Thursday’s episode, Penny went on to reveal how she announced her pregnancy to Rod.

“Did you put your pregnancy test in an ice pop and give it to Rod?” Charlene White had asked Penny, referencing an earlier story they’d been discussing.

“Not quite,” Penny replied. “But when Rod said, ‘Come on let’s make a baby’ and we decided that was the road we were going down-“

She was cut off by Nadia Sawalha, who asked: “Did he say that?”

“Let’s make a baby? Yeah,” Penny said. She went on to explain it was a surprise to her.

Finishing her story, Penny said: “I had a miscarriage, so I was very cautious about building my hopes up.

“So I did a pregnancy test when I thought I’d missed a period – sure enough, it was positive.

“So it was a Christmas gift or a birthday gift, I can’t remember now.

“It was a gilt box for his desk, and I put it inside and wrapped it up, so then when he opened it, that was his gift.”

Rod and Penny have two sons together, Aiden and Alastair.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
