Rochelle Humes reflects on non existent relationship with dad when she was growing up

This Morning host Rochelle Humes opened up about the non existent relationship she had with her dad when she was growing up in today's episode of the ITV show (Thursday 20 January).

During an emotional viewer phone-in about painful feuds and how to mend them, Rochelle, who is standing in for usual presenter Holly Willoughby, heard the story of one anonymous viewer called 'Sarah.'

'Sarah' had called in to speak with Rochelle, co-host Phillip Schofield and the show's agony aunt Vanessa Feltz to ask whether she should forgive her mum for lying to her for years about who her real birth father was.

After listening to 'Sarah's' story, mum of three Rochelle then reflected on her past, drawing on her own experience with her biological father Mark Piper to help the caller see things from a different perspective.

The 32 year old turned to Phil and Vanessa and said: "This is the sort of thing that would definitely make me very angry."

"Me and my dad didn't have a relationship but I always knew about him and my mum was very good at doing that."

Rochelle continued to speak about how she would have coped if her mum hadn't been so open and honest about Rochelle's birth father, following their divorce when Rochelle was three.

Rochelle said directly to 'Sarah': "If not, it would definitely make me angry, for sure. However sometimes when you grow older, you may feel like you actually understand her theory."

"Was he the sort of person that she wanted around her? Or was she trying to protect her from the truth and was the real story quite traumatic? You'll never know unless you talk."

The former Saturdays singer has previously spoken about growing up in a single-parent home and being raised by her mum.

In an interview with Red Magazine in 2020, Rochelle credited her family with husband Marvin Humes for giving her 'closure' on her own relationship with her dad.

Rochelle explained: "For a long time it was just me and mum. She was sort of like Wonder Woman because my relationship with my dad was non-existent."

The star went on to explain that when she reached the age of 17, she become 'curious' about who her dad was and decided to meet him.

Opening up about when they met each other for the first time, Rochelle told Red: "I was so nervous, but I was open-minded; my mum had been very good at not talking negatively of my dad."

Rochelle also paid credit to her mum for never badmouthing her father, and always giving everything a positive spin.

She said: "Bless her, my mum had always said to me, ''You know, some daddies just aren't very good with daughters – mummies are better with girls.'"
