Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played By Mark Harmon) made his shock departure from NCIS in episode four, after being in the series since the pilot episode his absence is still felt by fans. However, some observant viewers noticed a glaring clue in the show’s intro which suggested he could return for another episode.
The episode titled ‘Great White Open’ saw Gibbs work his last ever case with his NCIS team.
His departure from the show was emotional for viewers as Mark had portrayed the character for 18 years and fans found it hard to picture the show without him.
Since his exit, Gibbs has been replaced by Special Agent Alden Parker (Gary Cole) and viewers have been slowly but surely adjusting to the change.
However, after episode eight aired a number of fans noticed Mark was still in the intro despite his departure from the show.
These observant viewers took to Twitter to share, this could possibly hint at his highly desired return to NCIS.
SmolHeroine shared: “Hm… I don’t think Gibbs is completely out of NCIS UNTIL they change the intro. I know they added the new people, but have yet to remove Mark.”
BonIrisch made an interesting point: “Mark Harmon will come back for an ep sometime this season I bet. He’s still in the opening credits and does the ‘Stay tuned’. Also, he’s left and come back multiple times.”
Stanfinger agreed: ”With Mark Harmon still leading the NCIS musical intro, I have to believe he will return this season.”
Jasonew6 commented: “So why is Gibbs still in the intro to NCIS? Is he going to make a return, or are they just too lazy to make a new intro?”
The 30-second NCIS intro is compiled with clips of the main characters and while the show has added new characters, Mark Harmon still remains.
This could only point at his eventual return as even showrunner Steve Binder revealed the doors were open for Mark.
In a statement, he said: “So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”
As well as the addition of new characters to the intro, the show usually removes the names of actors who have left for good.
This was the case with Cote de Pablo who played special agent Ziva David from 2003 until her final exit in 2013.
CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl also spoke out about Mark’s potential return in her statement, which read: “Mark’s always been part of the show, Mark’s always going to be part of the show.”
She added: “In terms of his on-air appearances, we’re just going to have to see how it plays out going forward.”
Gibbs has also been mentioned in the script since his exit and more recently in the latest episode by Dr Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen).
On Monday’s episode Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover) was curious about purchasing a gun and having it on her nightstand as protection.
This decision came after she and Dr Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) were hostages in the diner in Season 17.
She opened up to Palmer about the idea of owning a gun and asked: “What would Gibbs do?”
To which he responded: “I think he would say take a breath, you can be conflicted while still shopping.
NCIS season 19 continues Monday on CBS.
