Kate Garraway says her daughter Darcey asked if she was going to take her own life when husband Derek Draper was fighting for survival.
Derek, 53, had been the UK's longest running in-patient for Covid-19 after he fell ill last March.
Over a year ago he was placed into an induced coma and the Good Morning Britain presenter's torture continued.
But Derek has now been taken off all machines and will receive round-the-clock care at the family’s home in North London after almost 400 days away.
Kate has told Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield on This Morning of the brutal moment the 15-year-old came to her with a harrowing question.
She said: "Darcey said 'mummy are you going to kill yourself' out of the blue. She is so blunt, it sounds horrific and she will always go to the most awful thing.
"She just came out with it. I said 'my god no!' and she replied 'I just thought I had better check'.
"I told her I was so scared she thought that and she told me not to make a big thing of it!"
Phil added: "She just wanted affirmation, it was the most brutal way of asking if you are OK."
Kate said: "It was her way of telling me she wasn't just thinking of her dad."
The TV star told the duo: "I don't think I have been very strong, I have just been supported by wonderful people.
"Folding just doesn't seem an option.
"What's got me through is fixing a target. I don't know what it's going to be."
In her new memoir The Power Of Hope, which is being serialised by The Mail on Sunday, Kate lays bare the struggle she and her young family faced.
She said he told her in the text: "This is not the last time you will see me. It isn’t."
Agonisingly, she then revealed he told her: "I want you at the funeral."
