Strictly Come Dancing returned to BBC for another instalment of the celebrity dance competition. On the show’s spin-off series, It Takes Two, contestant John Whaite lifted the lid on his upcoming performance for the quarter-finals and made a surprising revelation.

On Saturday, the Bake Off star and his professional partner Johannes Radebe took to the dancefloor to perform the Argentine Tango to Beethoven’s Fifth.

The pair wowed the judges and received ample praise, as they were fittingly scored a total of 39 out of 40.

After being temporarily replaced by musical legend Cynthia Erivo due to Covid, Craig Revel Horwood returned and said: “It was fantastic seeing the tango done in its original form, it was first danced by two men, I absolutely loved it.”

With so much anticipation about their routine for the quarter-finals, John and Johannes shared some major details.

Speaking to presenter Rylan Clark on Sunday’s episode of It Takes Two, Johannes revealed: “The choreography is fun, fantastic and tricky.

“Once again we’re working with Matt Flint this week and he did not hold back,” the professional added.

John also shared: “He’s given us the most incredible lifts this week,” he emphasized, “we’re doing crazy lifts this week, I’m not going to tell you what they are.“

Asking for more detail, Rylan asked: “How crazy lifts are we going?”

“You wouldn’t expect it from two six foot two blokes, you’d think it wouldn’t be physically possible,” John responded.

Speaking on their impressive performance on Saturday, Rylan asked Johannes how he felt watching the episode back.

The professional said: “It fills me with pride and joy, and that’s because John works and is a perfectionist and I love it, he’s that hard on himself so I don’t even have to do much.”

He continued: “We’ve worked really, really hard and that’s what we do every single week, we try to just come through and own what we do, and it’s starting to pay off.”

It paid off in a major way, as the two received a standing ovation from all the judges, except Craig who praised them nevertheless.

Cynthia Erivo, who returned this week to fill in for Motsi Mabuse stated: “I was crazy for it, this was gorgeous.”

While Shirley Ballas agreed and gleefully declared: “They’re back.”

She added: “Fabulous, it was great, such wonderful skills in leading and how you handled Jojo was perfection.”

After being placed at the top of the leaderboard, John and Johannes are set to be dancing the Salsa to We Are Family by Sister Sledge.

The competition will be getting even hotter as Saturday will be the quarter-finals, with only four couples taking part.

Sadly, presenter Tilly Ramsey and her partner Nikita Kuzmin hung up their dancing shoes after failing to impress the judges and being eliminated from the competition.

Viewers will have to tune in to see which couple will be one step closer to taking home the highly-desired glitterball trophy.
