Who Wants To Be A Millionaire viewers were left wincing at their screens on Tuesday evening, as they witnessed a contestant lose £93,000 after a gamble.
Plumping to use her "phone-a-friend" lifeline, contestant Sarah called her friend Barbara for some advice, hoping to climb the money adder to £250,000.
However, when Barbara delivered the wrong answer, sending Sarah home with her safety net of £32,000, host Jeremy Clarkson was quick to take a swipe at the phone-a-friend.
When the next contestant appeared in the hot seat, Jezza mocked his own intelligence – poking fun at Barbara in the meantime.
He remarked: "Don't trust me, or Barbara, are the two main ones."
Sarah had been playing brilliantly until she was dealt a tricky geography question, which read: "Which body of water connects the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea?"
Four answers were listed below: Windward Passage, Yucatan Channel, San Bernadino Strait, and the Bay of Campeche.
Sarah had a hunch the correct answer could be Windward Passage, but she felt her mate Barbara, who works in shipping, would be better equipped to give the right answer.
On the phone, Barbara suggested Windward Passage was correct, but the time ran out before she could add anything further.
Picking up on her uncertainty, Jeremy remarked: "It wasn't quite long enough to show how sure she was."
Sarah decided to gamble with Windward Passage, claiming she would be "happy" if the answer was wrong because she'd had a great time on the show.
Sadly, after a commercial break, Jeremy revealed the answer was wrong, expressing his sympathy for Sarah.
He said: "Desperately sorry because I do love a gambler and I have thoroughly enjoyed having you here."
"How can I put a cheery spin on this?" Jeremy then wondered.
Remaining upbeat, Sarah pointed out she was £32,000 richer than she had been before appearing on the show, leaving the studio with her head held high.
Jezza congratulated her, instructing the audience: "I think you should give her a massive round of applause because you’ve been a great contestant."
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire continues next Tuesday at 8pm on ITV.
