Cruella De Vil is on her way. Disney released the first trailer for Emma Stone’s Cruella on Feb. 17. The movie will be a prequel to 101 Dalmatians and give viewers a new understanding of the sinister fashion lover with an unhealthy obsession with fur. But will Cruella debut on Disney+ or in movie theaters?
Disney’s ‘Cruella’ cast is star-studded
The first official trailer for Disney’s latest villain origin story hit the internet on Feb. 17. The trailer showcased Stone, naturally, but it also gave first glimpses of the new characters being introduced.
Emma Thompson is the Baroness (who appears to be Cruella’s main rival in the film), Mark Strong is Boris, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste is Tabitha. As for characters from 101 Dalmatians, Emily Beecham is playing Anita, and Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry are playing Horace and Jasper, respectively.
The movie is going to show Cruella’s progression from the young Estella, a fashion hopeful, to puppy-killing Cruella.
Is ‘Cruella’ coming to Disney+?
The theatrical release calendar was thwarted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In an effort to release the movies and still make a profit, streaming services started experimenting with having dual streaming and theatrical releases. HBO Max did this with Wonder Woman 1984, and Disney did this with Mulan. Disney/Pixar’s Soul was released for free on the streaming platform on Christmas Day.
Disney announced on Feb. 17 that its upcoming animated feature, Raya and the Last Dragon, will come out in theaters and on Disney+ on March 5. Viewers watching on Disney+ will have to pay extra to access it, just like with Mulan. Fans have wondered what the studio would do with Cruella, given its live-action remakes tend to be box office hits.
What’s more, this is only the second villain origin story Disney has produced (the first being the Angelina Jolie-led Maleficent movies). The company taking a bet on Cruella‘s box office capabilities. It will get a theatrical release on May 28, 2021. It appears that it will only get a theatrical release, but that could change any day due to the pandemic.

Which Disney live-action remakes are coming to Disney+?
Disney has a bevy of live-action remakes in the works, and they’ve already decided the release fate of some. While Cruella is hitting theaters this spring, the Tom Hanks-led Pinocchio remake will debut exclusively on Disney+, although for free or at a price is not yet known.
The Little Mermaid remake starring Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy, Daveed Diggs, and Javier Bardem is currently filming, Peter Pan and Wendy starring Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell is on the horizon, and a live-action Hunchback of Notre Dame is also on the way.
Hercules, Lilo & Stitch, Snow White, The Sword in the Stone, and Robin Hood are reportedly all getting remakes as well, according to IGN. Balancing out which movies go directly to streaming and which movies get a theatrical release will be the name of the game for most streaming services until the pandemic has subsided.
