Here’s the real reason Aljaz Skorjanec left Strictly Come Dancing

Aljaž hints a potential Strictly return

Strictly Come Dancing star Aljaz Skorjanec shocked fans in 2021 after announcing he was leaving the BBC series as a professional dancer.

During his time on the show, the dance pro managed to win with model Abbey Clancy back in 2013, lifting up the Glitterball trophy for the first and last time.

Aljaz did make it to the final again in 2017 with actress Gemma Atkinson, but they were beaten by Holby City actor Joe McFadden and Katya Jones.

He has also been coupled with DJ Clara Amfo and presenters Alison Hammond and Kate Silverton.

Other partners have included Call The Midwife star Helen George, and models Daisy Lowe and Emma Weymouth. Finally, his last dance partner on the series was Sara Davies from Dragon’s Den.

Why has Aljaz Skorjanec left the Strictly Come Dancing professionals?

At the end of the series in 2021, Aljaz confirmed it would be his last on the show.

He had been a staple on the dance contestant for nine years before making his swift departure.

At the time, Aljaz released a statement on his social media addressing why he wanted to leave.

The dancer penned: “It didn’t matter how many beautiful ballrooms I performed in during my competitive career stepping onto the sacred Strictly floor was the most nervous I’d ever been.

“A little while ago I made the decision that 2021 would be my last. The show has given me the opportunity and freedom to create and express myself in front of millions of people every weekend for the last nine years.”

Aljaz is married to fellow former Strictly star Janette Manrara, who also left the show to present the spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two.

Janette took to Instagram to pay a tribute to her husband following his decision to leave.

She wrote: “Taking someone who wants to learn to dance and making them truly fall in love with it.

“He makes every single person he encounters feel absolutely special; ask any of his partners throughout the years.”

“We are so sad to be saying goodbye to Aljaz after almost a decade as a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing,” a BBC spokesperson stated on Twitter.

“During his time on the series he has provided us with some unforgettable moments… through his incredible choreography, passion for dance, and heart of gold.

“He will be missed by his Strictly family both on and off the dancefloor and we wish him only the very best as he embarks on his next chapter.”

Following Aljaz and Janette’s exits from Strictly, they have kept their fans informed about their lives with regular updates on their social media pages.

Earlier this year, the pair welcomed their first child together, Lyra Rose.

While the pair have strayed away from the limelight, Janette has made appearances on Morning Live since giving birth in July.

Speaking to Hello! about becoming a father, Aljaz said: “I was beside myself… I feel like I’ve been thinking and dreaming about that moment for so long.

“We were preparing for IVF mentally and physically and then it was just a relief to finally have that positive test. I have so much respect for any parent that goes through IVF, not just for what it puts them through physically but mentally too.”

Strictly Come Dancing airs tonight at 6.35pm on BBC One.
