Fans of the hit blockbuster Contagion will be thrilled to know a sequel is in the works following the renewed interest in the original.
The 2011 drama, which starred Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon and Jude Law, followed the now very familiar story of how government and healthcare workers handled the global pandemic during a virus outbreak which originated in China, and their mission to find a vaccine.
As the real life coronavirus pandemic began to unfold in March, Warner Bros. enjoyed a huge spike in sales and streams of Contagion which made a reentry on the film charts.
So it only makes sense that director Steven Soderbergh is planning a follow-up.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Soderbergh – who is co-directing the Oscars 2021 – teased: ‘I’ve got a project in development that Scott Burns is working with me on, that’s a kind of philosophical sequel to Contagion but in a different context.
‘You’ll kind of look at the two of them as kind of paired but very different hair colors. So, Scott and I had been talking about, “So, what’s the next iteration of a Contagion-type story?” We have been working on that.
‘We should probably hotfoot it a little bit.’
Basically, Contagion 2 coming to a streaming service near you ASAP.
Screenwriter Scott Z Burns addressed the eerie comparisons between Contagion and the real life Covid-19 crisis, and explained how it’s no surprise given the level of research he conducted to make sure the movie would be as true to how a real pandemic would unfold as possible.
‘It has been very strange to me, whether on social media or in conversations with friends, that people will say to me, “This is uncanny how similar it is”,’ he told Slate.
Burns continued: ‘And I don’t find it to be that surprising, because the scientists I spoke to, and there were a lot of them, all said that this was a matter of when, not if.
‘So, I guess my feeling as someone who believes in science is that when scientists tell us those things we would do well to listen.’
Actress Winslet also revealed that starring in the movie prepared her for the coronavirus pandemic and the measures needed to protect her health such as wearing face masks.
However, experts warned that watching pandemic-related movies such as Contagion could ‘amplify anxiety’ among viewers.
