All Creatures Great and Small season two will be airing on Channel 5 from September 16. The second outing picks up three months after the events of the season one finale, and it is springtime in the Dales. Helen star Rachel Shenton said the cast were in for a shock during filming for the TV show’s second season.

All Creatures Great and Small season two will feature six episodes, as well as the highly-anticipated Christmas special.

At the end of the first season, James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) was even more certain about his feelings for farmer’s daughter Helen.

She was due to marry Hugh Hulton (Matthew Lewis) at Christmas but had a change of heart at the last minute.

Actor Ralph has already teased there will be some awkwardness between the pair in the new series.

He also said James will be torn between Darrowby and Glasgow as he is offered a new job.

Fans have fallen in love with the idyllic setting in the Yorkshire Dales and it provides the perfect sense of escapism.

However, the cast faced some difficulty during filming, with Shenton saying the weather caught them by surprise.

She said: “When we began filming the second series back in March, the weather was worse than series one!

“I had thermals on all the time, we all had hand warmers, none of us could believe it. We were so excited to be shooting in the Spring.

“We shot at Heston Grange (The Alderson’s farm) at the beginning of April and the wonderful man that runs the farm is now a friend.

“I said ‘Well Stuart the next time we are up here, it will be May, so the weather’s going to be better then!’ and he just laughed and said ‘Lass, you’ve not spent much time in’t Dales!’.

“And he was spot on! We didn’t have nice weather until we were into June, but when the sun has come out, it’s been perfect.

“However, we have had lots of scenes where we have been holding lambs and they’re just gorgeous, so that makes the weather troubles easier!”

Fans were given a glimpse at how unpredictable weather in the Dales can be in the first season.

When James first arrived in Darrowby, he got caught in a torrential rain shower and was late for his work placement.

There was also terrible fog the night before Helen’s wedding, and she was worried she would miss her big day.

The fog left Helen and James no choice but to spend the night together at the couple’s house they had visited.

They had been helping the couple’s dog deliver her litter of puppies and it was one of the pair’s favourite moments.

Shenton was definitely right in saying the adorable animals make the harsh conditions worthwhile.

Some new furry friends will be introduced in the upcoming season, so viewers have plenty to look forward to.

The trailer for the new series has been released and it shows James returning to the Dales from Glasgow.

He realises how much he has missed being around Helen and the rest of his friends and colleagues.

Fans took to Twitter to share their excitement, with one saying: “Nailed this show I was nervous the original was epic but they have done a great job casting these guys and girls.”

Another said: “Loving this remake. I shall be tuning in.” The original series of the same name aired in the 1970s.

The story was inspired by the writings of Yorkshire vet Alf Wight, who used the pen name James Herriot.

All Creatures Great and Small season 2 starts on Channel 5 on September 16.
