Deciding what to call your tiny tot can be a big decision. You don’t want them to grow up and write a bitter memoir about how they were bullied on account of their poor name choice. You also want to find something that will suit them and sounds nice, whatever your tastes are.
You could trawl through a baby book for names, or name them after a close family member. But why not instead look to your TV family for inspiration. That’s right, we mean your favourite soap stars.

Taking inspiration from soaps seems to be ever growing in popularity; UKTV Play have spotted that the trend has taken off and that many have been influenced by their favourite characters.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) baby name data was analysed by the on-demand service from 1996 to 2018 and they also checked threads on Mumsnet in order to see which soap characters have had the most input on this year’s baby names.
The top ten baby names influenced by your favourite soap are as follows:
The top name is Bobby, named after Bobby Beale, the longstanding EastEnders character we first saw appear on our screens as an infant.
Billy is also very popular, like the name of EastEnders character Billy Mitchell. What is great about this name is that it is also gaining traction as a girls name, especially when spelt with an ‘ie’ on the end.
Although those two are fairly traditional names, the more exotic Keanu comes in third place.
Again this is the name of a character from Walford, Keanu Taylor, the notorious bad boy of the programme, who recently departed Albert Square.
Keanu is a name of Hawaiian origin, which means “the breeze”. It has also been popularised by Hollywood star Keanu Reeves.
As for female names, Eve is very popular and it is also the name of Eve Jenson from Emmerdale.
When it comes to names, EastEnders and Emmerdale are the most popular soaps for either predicting or inspiring the baby names of 2020, whereas Coronation Street only has two that have made the list, Faye and Abigail.
We guess it depends what soap you are the biggest fan as to what baby name you will consider…
