My nephew is worried about my son, who has told him he wants to undergo height-reduction surgery

DEAR DEIDRE: MY nephew is worried about my son, who has told him he wants to undergo height-reduction surgery.

I’m a single mum to a lovely boy of 14. He’s very tall, like his dad. He’s 6ft 1in and growing at a rate of knots.

But he hates being tall – and has started to stoop and to refuse my meals.

He will occasionally eat junk food with the allowance his dad gives him but little else.

I find whole meals barely touched or in the bin.

I’m scared he’s developing an eating disorder and his skin is bad.

My nephew is 25 and he’s a mentor for my son.

I’ve checked online and you can have surgery for non-growth – but not when you’re tall.

DEIDRE SAYS: A surgeon may correct a difference in leg-length but there’s no shortening surgery.

Have a chat with your son, explain you’re worried and that eating badly or missing meals won’t stop him getting taller.

Everyone develops at different stages and although he’s the tallest of his mates now, they’ll soon catch up.

Together with his dad, encourage positive discussions about tall people: “Isn’t he lovely and tall . . . ” and mention other successful tall people in the public eye, such as actors Chris Hemsworth (6ft 3in) and Dwayne Johnson (6ft 5in) for starters.

My support pack called Troubled Teenagers explains how you both can find help.
