I'm scared my boss will fire me when he finds out I have epilepsy

DEAR DEIDRE: I’VE been a lorry driver for 45 years but I’m scared my boss will fire me when he finds out I had a seizure while driving.

I’m 65 and live by myself and my job really got me through the pandemic.

But last month I had a seizure at my sister’s. She told me I zoned out and stared into space for four minutes.

The same thing happened again two weeks ago, when I was driving.

Luckily I was stopped at traffic lights. The driver behind found me, staring blankly into space.

My doctor thinks I might have epilepsy, which would mean I wouid not be allowed to drive for a while.

Perhaps your employer could find you another role that doesn’t involve driving?

It might be reassuring to chat with people who know what you’re going through, via the Epilepsy Society (epilepsysociety.org.uk, 01494 601400).
