Selena Gomez has been on her share of dates through the years. Though she’s had plenty of memorable and over-the-top nights out with fellow celebrities, there’s one date she went on long ago that was all-around bad — and it was one she had with ex-boyfriend/ fellow Disney Channel alum Nick Jonas.
Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas’ romance was brief
Those of you who were huge Disney Channel fans back in the late 2000s/early 2010s might remember Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas sending practically everyone into a frenzy when they started dating in 2008.
Though Gomez and Jonas were the ideal pre-teen lovebirds, their romance didn’t last long as they split in 2010 after an on-again, off-again stint.
But despite calling it quits, Jonas and Gomez have remained good friends over the years. They have even gone on record praising each other as “incredibly smart,” “amazing and inspiring” individuals all while maintaining their enduring, platonic love for each other.
Selena Gomez exposed Nick Jonas for taking her on a failed Central Park date
Though Gomez and Jonas have since moved on with other people, they recently proved that they still have a cordial relationship with each other.
In 2018, Jonas appeared on BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast Show, where he participated in a Q&A segment while attached to a heart rate monitor.
During the discussion, Gomez popped up in a pre-recorded video and teased Jonas about one of their old dates.
“Hello Nicholas, it is Selena Gomez,” she said in the video, per Insider. “So I know what you’re doing and I would like to remind you of a time where we all went to Central Park together, it was definitely over 10 years ago. I was wondering if that brought up anything for you, I know Central Park was really beautiful, it was actually my first time.”
As his heart rate spiked, Jonas went on to reveal just what Gomez was talking about.
“Okay, so this was at a time when my brothers and I were in a boy band and we were in Central Park and we were very private about our relationship,” the “Jealous” singer explained. “And [Gomez] was unhappy that her Central Park experience was ruined by the fact that I walked about 20 feet away from her. Even though they were taking pictures of us and obviously we were there together it was like, ‘It would be better if we stand about 25 feet apart.’”
“So it ruined her Central Park experience,” he continued. “So her and Taylor Swift, who was dating my brother Joe—but we never confirmed it—walked 25 feet behind us as we walked through the park by ourselves.”
Though it was a pretty awkward date, at least it’s a funny memory Gomez and Jonas can always look back on!
Selena Gomez went on to have a tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship with Justin Bieber
Though her Central Park date with Jonas was rather lackluster, not all of Gomez’s dates throughout the years have been bad.
In 2011, the Wizards of Waverly Place star was surprised with an over-the-top date when she was romantically involved with singer Justin Bieber.
According to MTV News, the “Baby” crooner rented out the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where he and Gomez ate a steak and pasta dinner and watched Titanic.
After going all out with the heartfelt gesture, Bieber shared a message on Twitter for all of the men who weren’t pulling their weight in the chivalry department. “Romance isn’t dead,” he tweeted. “Treat your lady right fellas.”
Gomez and Bieber went on to have a five-year on-again, off-again relationship that lasted until March 2018, when they decided to call it quits for good.
Three months later, the “Sorry” singer became engaged to his now-wife, Hailey Baldwin, whom he tied the knot with in September 2019. Today, the pair are still happily married.
As for Gomez, she is currently single. Though she has gone on dates with fellow celebrities, the actor is not looking to rush into anything as she’s comfortable not being tied down.
“She is keeping her options open in terms of guys,” an insider told Entertainment Tonight in December 2020. “Selena is focusing on what makes her happy and what feels good to her—whether that’s a relationship or not.”
