Richard E Grant has urged his fans to “try to find something to lift their spirits” in a heartfelt video posted to Twitter. Richard said he was inspired to “try and be happy” by his late wife, Joan Washington, who died earlier this year after she was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.

The actor shared the emotional clip with his 280,000 followers with the caption: “Something for the weekend…to you and yours!”

Richard says: “Shortly before my wife died, she charged my daughter and I to try and be happy.

“Every day we have tried to find something to lift our spirits at the end of an absolutely brutal year.

“I hope you can do the same, wherever you are.

“Beat Covid and everything else that is being thrown at us.”

The clip has been liked more than 5,000 times and many have shared Richard’s sentiment.

A user named 3EyedTiger wrote: “Find a happy ritual, could be as simple as the first espresso of the morning. Something to look forward to that comes around every day.”

Mazza penned: “Is there a more beautiful message shared by someone offering their vulnerability and personal experience.

“Richard is a beautiful soul and I pray for more people like him.”

Sward said: “Richard E Grant delivering a great message. Find something each day to make us happy.”

Another named Richard echoed: “Words to live by. Just all kinds of excellent.”

Richard’s wife Joan died in September, just eight months after her diagnosis.

The couple were married for 35 years and share a daughter, Olivia.

The Withnail and I actor announced his wife’s passing on Twitter in an emotional tribute.

He wrote: “Joan – Love of my Life and Giver of Life to our daughter Olivia. Our hearts are broken with the loss of your life last night. 35 years married & 38 together.

“To be truly known and seen by you, is your immeasurable gift. Do not forget us, sweet Monkee-mine.”

He has previously described how Joan asked him and their daughter to “let her go” during her battle with cancer.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, Richard said: “It’s been my privilege to be by your side, sharing our last eight months together, enabling us to say everything we possibly wanted and needed to, so that when you asked Olivia and me two weeks ago ‘to let me go’, we unequivocally said ‘yes’.

“Olivia and I are profoundly grateful for everything that you’ve gifted us with, and we’re relieved that you no longer have to struggle for breath.”
