Matt Baker has shared his congratulations to Alex Jones on her baby news as he returned to The One Show on Wednesday 31 March.

Former The One Show host Matt, 43, made an emotional comeback to the BBC programme to discuss what he’s been up to since sharing his decision to quit.

Matt appeared to be fighting back tears as he appeared on BBC viewers’ screens from his farm in the Durham Dales.

As the former presenter made a comeback to the show a year to the day after leaving, he announced: “I’m a bit emotional to be honest with you. Hearing your voice, hearing the music at the start and just that general vibe.

“It’s incredible that I said goodbye on a laptop propped up on an ironing board a year ago today and now I get to welcome you all to the Durham Dales because that’s the reason why I’m talking tonight because I’ve got this new show starting.

“It’s basically all about our family farm and the situation, really, that I found myself in to be honest with you, not long after lockdown.”

During the interview, Matt shared his congratulations to Alex after she announced she was expecting her third child.

Hinting he knew about the happy baby news before Alex shared it with The One Show viewers, Matt said: “It’s so wonderful we can talk about your news publicly now which is marvellous.

“So, publicly, congratulations!” To which Alex said: “Thank you so much.”

Matt appeared on the show to discuss his new reality show, Matt Baker: Our Farm, which he directed himself.

The former Blue Peter presenter, who shared the difficulties of balancing work and family life recently, decided to document the transformation of his parents’ Duram Dales farm after his mother had a bad accident.

Matt’s mum Janice badly damaged her knee after having an accident in a sheep pen, which sparked Matt, his wife Nicola and their children to move to the farm to look after his parents.

He said: “The whole family are involved. It’s an interesting one, this because so many times I’ve been asked to make something from the farm and it’s a situation that we found ourselves in.

“Mum had this really nasty accident in the sheep pens and, basically, we knew we needed to reshape the farm and in its essence at the heart of this programme it’s all about how the tables turn when we’re at the certain stage in our family lives where we end up looking after our parents in the same way that they looked after us.

“And, we had an absolute joy making it and it really was a dream. I mean it was taught for you mum, the situation you found yourself in?”

Matt then turned to his mum, who was sat on a bale of hay next to the rest of the family. And Janice said: “Yes it was.”
