Gregory Diaz IV is opening up about his audition for In The Heights!
The 16-year-old stars in the new movie musical as Sonny, alongside Anthony Ramos, Leslie Grace, Corey Hawkins and more.
If you don’t know, Sonny is the young cousin of Anthony‘s Usnavi, and also works at the bodega with him.
In The Heights is a big role of Gregory, who is from New York and actually got his start on Broadway.
For his audition, he shared how he had quite the fangirl moment…
“Walking into a room and seeing people like Jon [M. Chu], Quiara [Alegría Hudes, who wrote the musical’s book and the screenplay], Anthony and Lin,” he told the New York Post. “I was fangirling on the inside. But on the outside I kept my composure.”
After his final callback, it only took three hours before he got call saying he got the part.
“Lin-Manuel Miranda FaceTimed me on my phone!” Gregory shared. “And I was just like, ‘Hey, what’s up?’ And we just kind of chitchatted and he said, ‘Do you want to be a part of this?’”
In The Heights is based off of Lin-Manuel‘s Broadway musical of the same name. The movie is out NOW in theaters and on HBO Max. The soundtrack was also just released!
Gregory is pictured here at the In The Heights premiere held at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday night (June 9) in New York City.
