Chris Evans, 55, has five children – Jade, 35, whom he shares with former partner Alison Ward, 12-year-old Noah, eight-year-old Eli and two-year-old twins Walt and Boo with current wife Natasha. With four children all under the age of 15, lockdown has no doubt been tough for the couple, and the Virgin Radio DJ decided he would now like to take on the role as the “fun dad” in their family dynamic. Speaking to his co-stars Rachel Horne and Vassos Alexander, they both applauded his choice to put all seriousness aside and concentrate on light-hearted stuff instead.

I’m going to go for the fun dad

“You can either be a good dad or you can be a fun dad,” he said, after revealing his kids let him get involved with whatever they were doing over the weekend.

“I’m going to go for the fun dad.”

Vassos agreed, echoing: “Always go for the fun dad!”

But the former BBC star continued had his reservations about how it might work.

“It’s not very advisable within the partnership as far as mission control is concerned,” he said, perhaps referring to parenting with wife Tash.

“You can be a completely qualified and paid up member of the funcle club – you can be a fun uncle because you don’t really have the responsibilities of a father,” he explained before bursting out laughing.

“But if you’re failing as a father just become the fun dad because at least the kids like you!”

He revealed he began his new persona by making his children a tasty snack to win them over.

“Yesterday, I got out the vegan Magnums and crushed them up and mixed them in some chocolate brownies,” he beamed as Vassos and Rachel’s mouths watered.

“There’s nothing not to like about that!”

He added: “That’s fun dad for you! Not a problem – always available!”

But it won’t be hard for Chris to become the epitome of “fun dad”, as his children already adore him for who he is now.

The radio star celebrated his 55th birthday on 1 April, and he was blown away by the presents they had made for him, so much so that he choked up on-air.

“There will be no requests for refunds as far as I’m concerned,” he beamed on last Thursday’s show.

“I have already been gifted the most wonderful birthday presents, one from each of my eldest boys.”

Later on in the program, he turned to Rachel and proudly showed her pictures of what Noah and Eli had made him.

“Have you seen what my boys did for me – see this one here,” he choked up as he pointed at his camera, “Isn’t that gorgeous?”

Rachel agreed, cooing: “That’s beautiful!”

“It is beautiful,” Chris snivelled before revealing to listeners why he was so emotional.

He continued: “This is from Eli. It’s an old plank – it’s beach wood – [it says], ‘Don’t mind what happens, Dad,’ and he knows that’s one of my favourite phrases.

“And that makes me want to cry!”

He paused before adding: “But I won’t!” as he went on to admit he “had a moment” where he was overcome with emotion.

The Chris Evans Breakfast show airs weekdays at 6:30am on Virgin Radio.
